Dark sky reserves mooted for areas of city and peninsula By Bridget Rutherford CALLS TO regulate light pollution in parts of Christchurch and Banks Peninsula to establish dark sky reserves have been reignited. The Spreydon-Cashmere Community has asked city council staff to provide advice on whether there are any lighting level controls in the city. Board chairwoman Karolin Potter raised the idea. She said the city council could designate particular areas, such as around Summit Rd, part of the residential red zone, Karolin Potter Halswell Quarry Park, and areas and beaches in Banks Peninsula, as dark sky reserves where no lights could be installed. Those areas had little light pollution at night already, she said. They would be similar to the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve near Tekapo, where artificial light pollution was strictly controlled. It comes as the city council is in the process of converting its street lights to LED technology. Ms Potter said not every street and laneway needed to be lit up, as light bounced off from other

IT’S HARD to believe another year has just about whizzed by. Board leaders sneak back in By Emily O’Connell MIKE MORA and Helen Broughton have survived being overthrown in their roles as chairman and deputy chairwoman of the HalswellHornby-Riccarton Community Board. But they keep their positions because they also cast a vote – for themselves. Four members voted to oust the pair at last week’s board meeting – Riccarton Ward city councillor Vicki Buck, Halswell Ward city councillor Anne Galloway and board members Natalie Bryden and Catherine Chu. But chairman Mora and deputy chairwoman Broughton with supporters Hornby Ward city councillor Jimmy Chen and board members Ross McFarlane and Debbie Mora ensured they scraped back in with a 5-4 majority. The board decided to review the positions a year ago – a decision that Mrs Broughton is calling “very unusual.” Ms Bryden said she voted against the current chairs because sometimes change can be good. She said a few people may have been interested in becoming

Mrs Broughton thought the voting “was slightly unacceptable.” She thought there would be more votes to keep the status quo. Park may have affected the vote. “Maybe Mr Mora is paying the price for voting for Kyle Park and speaking out against Denton Park, but he at least showed he can listen to his community,” he said. Mr Mora said anything controversial can cause tension and it’s especially difficult when you don’t get all the information “in a timely fashion.” Mr Mora and Mrs Broughton will remain in their roles until the next local body elections in October 2019.
The board also decided to hold its meetings at a different location next year. Future meetings will be held at the Fendalton Library and Service Centre on Jeffreys Rd. Mrs Broughton said though the centre is out of the ward, she believes the library will provide a better space: “The public can sit and see and hear all the board members,” she said. Mrs Broughton made a resolution to note any concerns from constituents. “It’s not set in stone, but I think it’s worth doing for at least six months.”

LINWOOD LIQUOR BAN Police are calling for a temporary liquor ban around Linwood Village on Stanmore Rd before New Year’s Eve. City councillors will ask staff to urgently look into introducing a permanent ban in the village and Doris Lusk Reserve, with a temporary ban in the meantime. City council staff will also meet with police to discuss the installation of cameras in the area. It comes after concerns over people drinking and littering in the area. TOY LIBRARY NEEDS HOME The Christchurch South Toy Library is looking for a new home as its premises at Spreydon School will be lost when the school closes in April. The Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board has asked city council staff to look into the availability of a space in the area, including Coronation Hall on Domain Tce. LINWOOD POOL OPENING The Linwood Ave community pool at Linwood School will be open from January 4 to Waitangi Day. The school, on the corner of Aldwins Rd and Linwood Ave, has two pools – one 30m-long and the other 18m. Entry will cost $1 for swimmers over five-years-old. A barbecue will be available for the community to use.

He is working hard to attain the knowledge and strategies he needs and is learning to apply what he learns. He is also doing his best to answer all maths questions in his homework. Manveer is a pleasure to teach. He works quietly and carefully to complete his class tasks and his tutor, Miss Hoggan, enjoys having him in her session and looks forward to Manveer continuing to make great progress next year. LINWOOD AVENUE School pupils pedalled their way into the history books last week when they became the first to ride on the Rapanui-Shag Rock cycleway. The first stage of the cycleway was officially opened on Wednesday morning. It takes cyclists from Linwood Park, through Linwood, into the city centre – a journey of about 2.5km. Eventually the cycleway will stretch as far east as the Ferrymead Bridge, where it will link to the Christchurch Coastal Pathway. For Linwood Avenue School pupils, the opening provided a chance to not only try out the new cycleway, but also a new bicycle. Some of the bicyles the school used for cycle safety training were stolen earlier this year so a few city council staff donated their old bikes to ICEcycles to repair. ICEcycles have already repaired and gifted one to a student for Christmas. The remaining bikes will be distributed to the school early in the new year. “It’s fantastic to see the kids on their bikes and enjoying the new cycleway,’’ said Innes Ward city councillor Pauline Cotter,

The city council is building 13 major cycleway routes across Christchurch. Three routes – the Papanui Parallel, the Little River Link and the Uni-Cycle – have been completed or substantially completed. The remaining 10 are in various stages of planning and implementation. In late October and early November, the city council surveyed 625 cyclists who were using the completed routes to gauge their thoughts on the cycleways. Ninety-four per cent of people who answered the survey said they thought the new physically separated cycleways had improved their safety and cycling comfort. Eighty-three per cent stated the new separated cycleways had played a role in encouraging them to make more trips by cycle. Ninety-two per cent of people surveyed said they either strongly agreed or agreed that physically separated cycleways should be installed on routes throughout Christchurch.

Call for dark sky reserves
Villa Maria gets pope’s blessing VILLA MARIA College received a surprise message from afar – a blessing from Pope Francis. The papal blessing is thought to be a first for the college in its 100-year history, arriving ahead of the centennial celebrations early next year. Principal Deborah Brosnahan said the blessing is confirmation the school is in line with the pope’s teachings. She said the blessing, which came as a surprise, is a “beautiful item” which means a lot to the school. The original block of land on Peer St was owned by a wealthy Christchurch family – the Wakefields – who named the property “Peerswick” after a race horse named “The Peer.” When the Wakefield’s riches turned to rags, the property was sold. The next family to take over the property built a two-storey house on the land, which they named “St Barbe,” only to suffer a similar financial fate and the home and land had to be sold. After another short period of private ownership, the building and land was eventually purchased by the Sisters of Mercy,

It will be taking the stage with Who Loves Me? in August. The musical is written by Australian singer and songwriter John Field. Halswell Drama Group vicepresident Tim Gunther said they’re “really excited” to perform the musical. He said Mr Field’s brother, Anthony Field, co-founded The Wiggles. Mr Field helped his brother write some of the music for the popular children’s show. Mr Gunther said the Field family are well known in Australia as successful musicians, writers and actors. Charities give families Xmas to remember

By Emily O’Connell THE Brethren of Lodge Takahe No. 397, The Freemasons Charity and City Harvest are joining forces to help the hungry at Christmas. Together they are providing a Christmas meal to the homes of 50 families across the city. Organiser Joshua Jackson said the idea is to provide families with quality food items to cook a Christmas meal in their own homes. Some of the food was collected from South City New World last week, with other items from the City Harvest food bank. A team packed and distributed half of the dinners to the chosen families’ homes. This week they will collate the remaining packs for delivery. The packages included a frozen chicken, stuffing, gravy, Christmas pudding, Lindt chocolates and fudge. Mr Jackson said the initiative is slightly different because they are giving families luxury items for a Christmas dinner instead
of “just a normal food parcel”. He hopes the Christmas dinners will relieve stress and spread Christmas joy. “It’s my belief that this drive will serve as a pilot to test the feasibility of potentially running a much larger scale project in subsequent years,” Mr Jackson said.
Marian College students entertain rest home residents EVERY YEAR Marian College runs an inquiry-based project with the junior school. In the final weeks of the term, all year 9-10 students were involved in the end-of-year collaborative unit, exploring the theme of beauty. The teachers got together with their students to develop a programme – on an aspect of beauty which interested them – with the end result being a presentation or performance to the whole junior school. House group, Takahe 3, explored “beauty in giving” and “beauty in older generations”. There were nine students and two teachers – Sarah Southen and Yvonne Teague – in the group. The project involved coming

up with a plan and carrying it out. The students made cards and boxes for residents at the nearby St Helenas rest home, baked cup cakes in their own time and bought items to give

MOROCCAN GRATED CARROT AND BEET SALAD Ingredients
PINEAPPLE, GINGER AND COCONUT CRUMBLE Ingredients Filling 1 pineapple 2 Tbsp butter 1 tsp vanilla essence 2 pieces star anise 4 pieces crystallised ginger, finely chopped 3/4 cup coconut milk Coconut crumble
100g butter 160g flour ½ tsp ground ginger 50g sugar 80g shredded coconut 1 lime, zested Directions Heat oven to 180 deg C. Peel pineapple, cut into quarters, remove core then slice into small even pieces. Melt butter in a large frying pan, add pineapple, vanilla and star anise.
Cook on a high heat until pineapple begins to caramelise. Add ginger and coconut milk, allow to simmer gently for 10min. Dice butter then rub in flour and ginger using fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir through sugar, coconut and lime zest. Spoon pineapple into a baking dish, sprinkle over coconut crumble mix and bake for 20-30min until crumble topping is golden and fragrant.

2 cups of grated carrots (from about three carrots) 1 cup of grated fresh beets (from about one medium sized peeled beet) 1/2 cup golden raisins 1/2 teaspoon paprika (sweet, not hot) 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon Small pinch of salt Small pinch of cayenne 2 Tbsp lemon juice 2 teaspoons honey 2 Tbsp sliced fresh mint leaves
Directions Place the grated carrots in a medium sized serving bowl. Place the grated beets into a sieve and briefly rinse with cold water. This will rinse away a little of the excess beet juice that may otherwise colour the whole salad beet red. Pat dry with a paper towel. Then add to the bowl with the carrots. Add the raisins. Stir to gently combine. In a small bowl, whisk together the paprika, cumin, cinnamon, salt, and cayenne. Then add the lemon juice and honey and whisk until smooth. Drizzle over the carrots and beets, then gently fold until the carrots and beets are lightly coated. Let sit for an hour before serving, either chilled or at room temperature, for the dressing to seep into the carrots and beets. Right before serving, stir in a couple tablespoons of sliced fresh mint leaves. Garnish with fresh mint.

School sends capsule into future ON THE eve of Villa Maria College’s 100th birthday, students have been working on a very forward-thinking project – a time capsule to be opened in 2068. Teacher Mikaela Hood has been working with her students to decide what items should be included in the capsule. “Two year 12 history classes were studying historical sources and as part of their learning look into different time capsules around the world and consider what and how historians Mikaela could use these Hood sources,” Ms Hood said. She said the idea of the college creating a time capsule evolved from this. Year 9 social studies classes have been involved in collecting the items to be included. Year 9E photographed the school, collected artefacts and asked principal Deborah Brosnahan to write a letter to the school’s future principal. Year 9G wrote letters discussing school life and their experiences at the college.

Fire risk columnist bids farewell By Mark Thomas – fire risk management officer THIS IS the last flame files. After nearly 11 years back in Christchurch and 518 columns completed, I’ve decided it’s time to shuffle off into retirement. The column has been something I’ve always enjoyed. Sometimes the time available has been too short for comfort and some other times I’ve had
a good subject and time to do it justice. I can only hope it’s been entertaining to some and even occasionally informative. I know the issues haven’t really changed. There are still too many kitchen fires. There are still too many arson fires. But in recent years, the number of fire fatalities has fallen. This must in part be the result
of our promotion of smoke alarms and I still live in hope of the day none of us will agree to sleep anywhere that is not alarm covered. Another quite satisfying part of this job has been the public speaking. I’ve talked to older people, young people, service groups and even prisoners in jail. Some of the most satisfying feedback I ever got was being told all of the group I had spoken to at Christchurch
Women’s Prison later used their phone privileges to ring home to ensure the family was protected by smoke alarms. Finally, sincere thanks are due to Star Media for providing me with the platform to preach the fire safety message. That’s a true public service and is very much appreciated. I’ve been fortunate with the calibre of people I’ve worked with, both in the firefighting family and those outside. Stay safe everyone.

hristmas is a time for celebration, spending time with friends and family and enjoying festive foods and drinks. Nutrition-wise, this festive fare can be a challenge. Here are some simple tips to help you survive the festivities: • Don’t try to lose weight over the festive season. With parties, families and all the special foods that go with Christmas, it’s going to be just about impossible! Your main aim should be to maintain your weight (using some of the tips below!) • Eat regular meals. If you skip meals you are more likely to fill up on high fat snacks. It only takes a few of these snacks to add up to more calories than your usual meal. • Avoid going to a function hungry, you can easily eat a lot of party food in a short
